Guinness + St Patrick’s Day

advertorial

St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us and despite the popularity of its celebration not widespread amongst Malaysians, you can’t deny being constantly reminded of it by all these ads Guinness has been circulating.

When someone mentions St. Patrick’s Day, images of leprechauns and four-leaved clovers spring to mind.
Silly
I happened to be in Edinburgh on this particular day in 2001, and i didn’t know what was going on.
People were yelling and laughing and going “Cheers!” to people passing the pubs.
Guys were racing around carrying flags on their backs and whooping away (rugby i think)
Younger ones were running down the street, wearing tall silly hats.
And drinking. A lot of drinking.

“What’s going on..!?” i asked my friends who’re all from there.
“It’s St. Patrick’s Day. I guess you don’t celebrate it back home…”

I remember partying like crazy with them.
But those people don’t need a celebration/excuse to party at any rate.

Because Guinness also has a rich heritage dating back 250 years, it has somehow become synonymous with the holiday (appearing in my reading up about it, even on bbc.co.uk!)

In conjunction with the holiday this year, Guinness appointed celebrity chef Emmanuel Stroobant to infuse Guinness with cuisine. The main man for Chef in Black demonstrated the versatility of Guinness not just as a beverage, but also it’s ability in playing a key role in dishes.

“Guinness Draught has such a rich and distinctive flavour that goes well with almost anything, although my personal favourite is rack of lamb glazed with some Guinness. Simply succulent and distinctly Guinness.”
- Emmanuel Stroobant

Of course, seeing that not all of us are fortunate to get him as a personal chef (even for half an hour!) you can still treat yourself to a bite of Guinness-inspired food at six participating bars and outlets in Klang Valley throughout the whole month of March, woo hoo!

Sorry to those living elsewhere, next time Winky

Jarrod & Rawlins on Jalan Dungun are one of the six outlets, and i was just there with LaughingLoga two weeks back (but the promotion hadn’t started yet).
I had a prawn avocado sandwich, streaky bacon and Guinness Draught.
He had dynamite sausages and… i forgot Shy (cos i only nicked his dynamite sausages).

Last Tuesday, i drove there with new KLue writer, Priya, who thankfully showed me directions even though she just got back from New York and i really should be the one who’s not such a lost mouse.

Guinness + Jarrod & Rawlins

Our drink orders were taken and someone said, “You don’t have to have Guinness if you don’t want to…”

Oh dude. You have no idea how often i drink Guinness Draught.

Chorizo, salami, mushrooms + peppers.

I didn’t even have to be surprised at what i ate there cos i’ve been going to Jarrod & Rawlins ever since they opened their first outlet in Hartamas and it has always been a preferred restaurant for me to catch up with friends.
If i want something heavy, i’d go for their pies, mash or steaks. Medium rare, please.
If i want something light, i’d go for their sandwiches (prawn avocado, mmm)
And i always wash it down with either shiraz or Guinness Draught.

Guinness + Jarrod & Rawlins

Serrano ham (below), king island cheddar, feta, and peppers stuffed with feta.

Guinness + Jarrod & Rawlins

All the appetizers complimented the Guinness Draught, and we couldn’t stop going, “Mmm…”
Priya doesn’t even fancy peppers but she ended up with one in her mouth!

Then came the lamb ribs, which are the Guinness promotion specialty.

Grilled Iberian pork ribs and crumbed pork pattie served with caramelized Guinness mustard glaze, dried cherry tomato, butter mashed beetroot, yogurt and sautée arugula (like rocket).

RM62++

It was fantastic.

Initially i was trying to maintain and cut the meat off with my knife and fork, but after a while, i decided to screw the idea and delicately held it with my fingers to gnaw on.
I couldn’t help it. The ribs would be insulted if i pathetically tried in vain to eat it.
That’s the way ribs are meant to be eaten *crosses arms and nods sagely*

When i asked chef Jacob how he found cooking with Guinness, he replied, “Certain people find it difficult to work with Guinness but i’m fine with it, it’s my first time working it with pork but it works!”

If this has piqued your interest, you can go to these outlets to try their Guinness dishes there:
(plus: you can also redeem limited edition Guinness St. Patrick’s Day merchandise when you order Guinness Draught at these participating outlets)

Lip Ice

advertorial

I am a lip balm girl.

Without lip balm, i will literally just bleed and die.
Okay. I was exaggerating. I might not die, but i sure as hell will bleed!
I have lips which are very sensitive and every time the weather takes a turn for the hotter or the wetter, they’d get dry really easily, just like when i was in Chiang Mai two months ago.

They used to be worse when i was in school.
Licking of lips would ensue in further cracking and redness, resulting in them being so painful, they’d go numb.
You think i’m joking?
Man, i used to pore over my Add Math book, oblivious to the condition of my lips due to the fact that they were so painful, i couldn’t even tell what their condition was anymore.

At one point of time, Angeline or Yishyene (my high school mates) made me laugh so much, i laughed/stretched my lips till they accidentally cracked and bled unto the square-patterned book, much to my shock.

To a point when i wake up in the morning to brush my teeth and opening my ClosedForTheNight mouth was such torture, they’d crack and bleed.

Trust me.

If anyone had problems which lip balm solved, i have. *raises up hand*

After incidences and experiments of going through various lip balm brands, i finally pinpointed the culprit brand (which i’m not going to state), plus it didn’t help that i was allergic to a particular chemical in particular brand.
So yes.
I cannot afford to go out without a lip balm in my handbag.

To avoid having to shift lip balms from one bag to another, i usually have one in each.
Which is why i think Lip Ice’s price for their Colour Lipbalm is very decent at RM12.90.
They have 6 shades - Pretty Pink, Hazel Rose, Hazel Blush, Candy Apple, Fresh Plum and Peach Cream.
Each (naturally) have a super moisture retention formula and AcHA (Sodium Acetyl Hyaluronate, as well as contains Vitamin E, Lanolin oil, Meadow Foam Seed Oil and Mango Seed Butter.

As you can see in the picture below, i only shot 4 out of the 6 variants…

Lip Ice

… that they have available because i got too excited in opening two first.

To be fair, i wore it out all last month - office, events, parties.

I was putting some on at Starbucks @ Pavilion when QueenKanch, being the Makeup-Observer that she is, noticed it.
“Eh, Joyce, what’s that?”

“Oh, it’s this Lip Ice thing… nice ar?”

She scrutinized, then went, “Nice, nice,” while nodding her head approvingly.
Okay. When the queen of make up says it’s nice. Then by damn, it must be nice.

I wore it out to one of the Kent parties on a Friday as well.

Lip Ice
DatinTini + i

This is what i was wearing then, the Lipice Colour Lipbalm in Hazel Blush -
Lip Ice

And that was when i, urm, got greedy, tore open another package to chuck into another handbag ‘cos i didn’t want to go digging for the first one.
Lipice Colour Lipbalm in Candy Apple -

Lip Ice

Besides the Lip Ice Colour Lipbalm, there are two other types:
- Lip Ice Color Gloss, for when you really want to draw attention to your lips at parties.
- Lip Ice Sheer Color, for a more natural tinge during the daytime.

Lip Ice

Lip Ice

Lip Ice

Needless to say, gloss is gloss la.

With LipIce gloss, it goes on evenly and its texture allows you to apply a slightly thicker layer of gloss should you want more glam coverage.
The Lip Ice Sheer Color, on another hand, supposedly gives lips a light pinkish tinge.
When i opened it, i was like, “Sheer colour..? More like no colour okay -_-”

Lip Ice

But i did the hand test, and there *was* colour.

Lip Ice

Seeing its colour’s really sheer, i’d say my best bet for wearing this is to wear it
- in the daytime.
- when you’ve done your eyes up dramatic, as to play down the lips.
- over other matte lip colours you already own, to alter its colour as well as add moisture.

I got a few, to which in fairy happiness i gave out to my close friends and colleagues, but guess what!
I was thinking that because Lip Ice seems kinda fairy-like, i’m going to send three readers one each, with a fairy card! All you have to do is tell me what was the most memorable lippy situation you had (kinkybluefairy@gmail.com), it could be like my horrible lipbalm allergy story, your first kiss, anything at all. The story just has to involve lips ;)You get a Lip Ice and a Fairy card!

Added Note:
Argh, some of you are sending to joycethefairy@gmail.com. No, don’t! It’s mixing up with my other emails..!
Remember send to kinkybluefairy@gmail.com
Contest ends Sunday 16th March 2008

Added Note #2:
Sorry, but only for residents of Malaysia
Also, please keep it to less then 500 words… some of you are writing super long stories, walau 0_o

Lip Ice

And not just any Fairy card. But a Flower Fairy card from M&S Winky
I have so many and what better way to send Lip Ice then in a Flower Fairy card.
I’m sending it out of sheer fairy-lovin’ happiness and joy and spreading fairy love and… Okay fine. You got me. I’m just starting my fairy cult okay.

Guinness Draught.

advertorial

The day AlcoJason came back for hols, i dropped everything and scrambled to meet the fellow to catch up.

We had a slight drama at first cos he was going to 1U to get a new hp for a prepaid Msian line, and in order to find him there he asked me to sms his UK line.

I couldn’t get his UK line. Whatevah
At all. Whatevah

After walking around the new wing in 1U looking for him like a donkey for an hour, i gave up and went to grab a pie and latte at Coffeebean whilst waiting for him to call me when he got his line up instead.

Little did i know that *my* phone was having connection problems and he couldn’t get through as well, all i got was a worried-sounding voicemail from him saying his phone with the UK line crashed all of a sudden.

What’s with our phone karma!?

Fellow tried calling me again from a public phone and we managed to hook up. Finally.

It was a Monday night and i wasn’t sure what was going on in town, so we decided to drink at TTDI Plaza.

Guinness

AlcoJason and i have always had drinks when we catch up in recent years.
But it never included Guinness Draught before.
I figure in the time we haven’t seen each other, our drinking preferences have changed dramatically if not somewhat.

I automatically went, “Guinness draught please,” to the waiter.
“Ha? Guinness? I didn’t know you like Guinness draught!” blurted AlcoJason.
“You have no idea dude… i drink it like almost every day now.”
“It’s okay, i like Guinness draught too!”
“… Guinness draught la then.” Laughing

Guinness Draught

Guinness Draught

(walau i cannot do this wei. editing pics of the foam makes me wanna run out to drink it now -_-)

JappyCalvin came to join us, and it was us three, like old times Pleased Heart
Old times: Kuantan 1st Edition, Kuantan 2nd Edition, NYE 2005, Barcode Days, Poppy Days, Other Poppy Days, (okay i can’t link them all, there’re too many!)

Wow. I went all nostalgic reading how we used to party. I think now, we party harder and (maybe) a bit smarter? Confused

Guinness

Then Gary called, asking me where’s happening that night cos his old friend was back from London too.
Dude, it’s Monday night la… i don’t know!
Funny thing is, everytime someone wants to party or drink, they’ll call me -_-

So i asked him to join us in Taman Tun.

Guinness

Guinness

Guinness

And then -_- i got another call from a slightly drunk someone…
So again, i just went, “Come join us la!”
And he came.

Guinness

Check out the trying-to-maintain eyes. Laughing

AlcoJason tried to make me drink at the same rate as him, one for one.
After three Guinness Draughts on my part, “Jason… i tak larat already okay, you’re drinking too fast plus i’ve cut down my drinking!”
“YEAH RIGHT!” WTF
“Yes i HAVE!” !@#$

Still…

Guinness

I remember all the Guinness promotions they were having earlier this year, like buy one pint, get half free; or buy (i forgot) a certain number of pints, get a lighter free.
Yeah. It’s kinda obvious how much i drink Guinness Draught.
>.<

From now till end of December, buy three pints, and get a Guinness towel free.

Laughing

Guinness

I think at the rate we go, we can have enough towels to provide a gym. Whatevah

Digi Fu-Yoh! Street Blast

advertorial

So one fine Saturday, i pottered down to Taman Tasik Titiwangsa for Digi’s FuYoh! Street Blast.

Problem was, i had to drive there alone cos CherubicCho meekly proclaimed he was already late for DeliciousBenny’s birthday party.

I was thinking, “Die. CONFIRM get lost driving there alone!!!”

Strangely enough, despite having no clue where i was heading to and never driven in that area in my entire Driving Ability Life, i stumbled upon the right road to turn into.

Miracle.

So la la la, drove down the curving road, and my eyes almost popped out when i saw the scores and scores of cars parked at the side of the road.

“Oh my God… a bit crowded right…” i moaned to myself.

I honestly didn’t expect the event to be *that* crowded!

Driving slowly, i past by all these cars parked before the venue, at the venue… and past the venue.

I succumbed to chucking my car next to a tree in a parking lot pretty far away.

-_-

As i was walking to towards the event, i saw all these Digi posters put up all over the place.

Branding kau kau.

I didn’t mind the walk though…

Heineken Served Extra Cold

advertorial

Since starting their series of Heineken DJ Quest and Thirst Studio competitions, i’ve been more involved with the brand due to work - writing preview and reviews on their events for KLue, and taking over Fiona Lim aka FionaMalibu in shooting the finalists at the Heineken Studio when she couldn’t make it for a day.

This month, they invited me to go for the launch of their new Heineken Served Extra Cold beer and just before it, i received a package.

Heineken Invite

I love the cover of the box, it’s similar to the ads i admired before on the back cover of some mags.
It’s a mix of glossy and matte, projecting the feel as if the cover’s icy cold and you’d wiped your hand over it.
Cool kan?
Cool

Inside the box was a grey and white scarf, i guess, to prepare us for the event.
Someone told me beforehand that they were going to lower the temperature in Velvet for it.

Earlier that day, i went for lunch with GarfieldChak and asked whether he wanted to go for it (yeah i love inviting people for events with me last minute cos it really depends on my mood on who i feel like hanging out with)

“Oh i’m going for it already, they sent me the invite,” he said casually, while zipping down the Penchala Link in his little black convertible (Sorry Chak, i don’t even know what car you drive haha! Don’t kill me).
“Ah! Okay, good, then i can ask someone else. They delivered me this scarf thing this morning okay. At 10am! On my off day… can die.”
“Oh yeah they sent it to me too.”
You? But why?” i quickly inserted, sneaking a glance at him to see his reaction at my naughtiness.
“Oh, cos… (fellow so blur, took him a while to digest what i just said)... what the fuck! I’m not important is it now! I’m semi-famous also okay! Cos i took part in the contest la!”

I laughed damn hard, thinking he was going to chuck me out of his car.

“Kidding la, kidding! Don’t so emo!”

GarfieldChak’s lead singer in Superbar and they were one of the finalists for Heineken Thirst Studio last year.

Laughing

So la di da, IceCalvin was supposed to come with me, and KinkyPugKevin was supposed to go with the Freeform team and meet me there.
Ended up both bailed cos one had to work and the latter was sick.

So i was thinking, “Who likes beer, and can socialise without me having to babysit them while i do my thing..?”

AzwinAndy came into mind.
Plus the fellow loves his beer.
Actually… he loves any alcohol la -_-

So happened the timing was perfect cos he was having a meeting on Jalan Ampang so i zipped over meet him outside Zouk.

The Heineken people were quite smart in the sense that they started the event outside with beer and grub at Terrace Bar, before ushering everyone in just before the launch starts.
Then inside Velvet, there’s no Heineken till the launch gambit is over, so everyone has to pay attention.

Reuben Thom + Reuben Samuel

Both Reubens were there. Again.
Damn weird la, it’s like i don’t usually see ReubenSamuel around, then suddenly i’m bumping into him almost every day!
I even bumped into him in the Westin lift with his parents the other night!

As for ReubenThom…
“What are you still doing here?! I thought you’re supposed to go back to Jakarta!”
He’s from Perth and Jakarta, and was only in KL cos ReubenSamuel aka Blastique was spinning at Global Gathering.
“I missed my flight…”
“Didn’t you just miss it the other day…”
“I… missed it again…”
“Fail la you.”

The fellow missed his flight twice because he was partying too hard.

No wait. Zedeck’s my girlfriend HAHA!
Andy’s… i suddenly thought of Butt Buddy cos that’s what AdamPoserPan calls him -_-

I was starving cos i hadn’t had dinner yet and was nabbing at all the food going around me, especially the chicken drumlets and potato wedges. Totally beer grub!

Oh yeah, then i bumped into this waiter in Velvet whom i haven’t seen for a year.
I squinted while trying to remember his name, “… Max!”
“How did you know my name?!”
“I don’t know… i remember from last time when Jason was back in December and you were helping us with the drinks…”

How selective is my memory.
That i can remember his name but i can’t others whom i meet week in and week out at events.

Kept on getting distracted from my search by bumping into former colleagues (like the infamous Spike Yong) and chatting to new people.

Some clumsy ass dropped a full bottle of Heineken on my ankle (which was damn painful) and baptised the insides of both my silver Aldos with beer (which was even more painful).

Sarah Chan + Joyce Wong

Finally found SarChan.

KinkyPugKevin gave her the nickname SarChan and she said it’s getting abit too much when i said i tried msging her on FB by typing ‘Sarchan’ instead of ‘Sarah.’

The launch was ending and both Reubens wanted to continue drinking elsewhere, but more chilled out instead of party-party lest ReubenThom missed his flight. For the third time.
